This year in our town, the seasonal change from winter to spring is partnered with a change in local government leaders. The biennial Madison County General Primary Election will be taking place this year on Tuesday, March 19. Notable county government positions on this year’s ballot are Circuit Clerk, Board Chairman and various district Board Members.
The main competition this year, with candidate’s names frequenting town conversation and lawn signs, is that of Board Chairman contenders Chris Slusser and Kurt Prenzler. Both are Republican candidates.
Prenzler is the current Board Chairman, running for his fourth re-election since his original initiation in 2016. His prized work has been that of reducing citizen taxes. He claims to be working in favor of the working families in Madison County.
“I must continue to fight against higher taxes, government interference, corruption and erosion of our values,” Prenzler said.
Slusser has worked in county politics since 2008 and is currently serving as Madison County Treasurer. His main values, as can be seen on his political website, are economic development and collaboration of local leaders.
“I see so much opportunity to expand the private sector, broaden our tax base, and ultimately reduce the tax bill for local taxpayers, if we have steady and competent leadership in the Chairman’s office,” said Slusser.
Conversely, many applicants this year will see an automatic induction, as they are running unopposed. These candidates include Tom Haine for State’s Attorney, Nicholas Novacich for Coroner and David Michael for Auditor.
Voters can choose to either vote early, by mail or on Election Day. For two weeks preceding the election, Early Voting Centers throughout the county will be open for those wishing to cast their ballots prior to Election Day. Ballots are also available through mail and registration is available through the Madison County Clerk’s Office.
Participating in elections is an effective way to use one’s voice to advocate for local issues. The Redbird Word staff encourages students and staff to vote and motivate others to cast their ballots this primary season.
