The Alton High School choirs came together on Dec. 5 to showcase their annual winter concert in the auditorium.
The concert started promptly at 7 p.m. with the bass choir singing “Fum Fum Fum.” Followed swiftly by “Little Saint Nick” and “El Desembre Congelat.”
“In rehearsal everyday, we reviewed all of our songs and we kept going over all the parts we didn’t know. We’ve worked on memorization for the past week or so,” Mackenzie Ingram, a junior in chamber singers, said.
In between choirs, the audience and choir leaving the stage and arriving on stage would sing a spirited carol. While leaving the stage, the bass choir and audience sang “Deck The Halls.”
Following the bass choir, the treble choir came on stage to perform “I See A Star” and “Adorar El Nino.” Ending off cheerfully, treble choir sang “Santa Baby” with a solo from freshman Haylea French. This time the audience and choir sang “I Heard The Bells On Christmas Day.”
Next came a spirited performance from bel canto featuring the songs, “Dormi Dormi bel Bambin” and “In Winter.” Their set ended with a fan favorite, “Last Christmas,” featuring a solo from sophomore Kenlea Jamison and a duet from sophomores Mackenzie Rayfield and Macie Tyler. While exiting the stage, “Silent Night” was sung by bel canto and the audience, featuring a candle lighting where bel canto and chamber singers lined the rows and stage with glowing candles.
“My favorite part was ‘Silent Night.’ I liked that part where everyone went in the crowd and switched to the next choir,” juniors Tyrone Hughes said.
The last choir to perform was chamber singers with their renditions of “Blow Blow Thou Winter Wind, ” “Ilus Haal” and “Grown Up Christmas List,” with a solo from senior Rachel Ware. The final melody to be sung was “Angels We Have Heard On High.”
To close the show, all choirs came to the stage to perform “Mary Did You Know,” featuring soloist, junior Nadja Kapetanovich. The choirs harmonized beautifully, capturing every audience member’s attention immediately.
