Last week a surprise announcement came, regarding the students who were enrolled in the biomed classes. They were called down to the auditorium during the first hour of the school day. The students were informed that none of the classes would be offered for the 2022-2023 school year anymore. These classes have been taught at Alton High School for many years. The classes ended after the teacher who had taught the classes for years, left the district. There were three total classes as well as an off campus nursing class called Health Occupations. The first year is a Biomedical Science class, the second is Human Body Systems, and third year is Medical Interventions. You must take and pass each of the classes in order.

I interviewed two students who were involved with this program. The first being Caitlyn Neely, who has taken all three of the on campus classes, and plans to pursue medicine in college. Caitlyn Neely was asked how she felt about the classes she has taken. Caitlyn’s response was, “ I feel like they have all been very hands on and informative classes.” The next student is Abbie Liparoto who had to change her class schedule because of this no longer being offered. Abbie plans to go to nursing school after graduation next year. Abbie was asked about her feelings about the courses ending. Abbie’s response was “It makes me sad because healthcare professionals are really needed in the world right now and Alton High School couldn’t find a replacement teacher so, other students including me don’t get the chance to further learn about healthcare.”

On a positive note, the off-campus Lewis and Clark Community College in Godfrey, IL is still offering Alton High School students the nursing program, Health Occupations. This class remains available because the LCCC faculty will be instructing our high school students.
