Over the years, Netflix has written multiple successful shows, but there is one show that stands out among the thousands of them. According to Netflix’s website, “Stranger Things” is currently the number one show globally.
Even with “Stranger Things” only meant to be a one season show, Netflix was quick to push for more seasons. Thus leading to it being one of Netflix’s biggest shows, with season five, volume one topping charts just in a mere week of its release.
However, season five of “Stranger Things” is very inconsistent with the rest of the show. There are a lot of major plot points that were changed at the very last minute without any of their famous foreshadowing hints coming into play.
Since the beginning of the show, The Upside Down was explained to be an underworld where monsters from the game “Dungeons and Dragons”, mirrored after their small town in Indiana named Hawkins.
Even previous seasons, like season four had major plot twists, but they didn’t feel rushed or lacking further information like season five. In season four, the viewers were introduced to Vecna, known as Henry Creel or 001, the original telekinesis case. Vecna was the underlying super villain of the first three seasons where the fans didn’t know of his existence.
Though with that big of a plot twist during the fourth season, a twist like that felt very reasonable. It gave fans more of an understanding as to why Will Byers was taken in the first season rather than being just some other random kid.
Now in season five we jump to this weird gap. The universe the writers had written is now losing its focus. Instead of Byers being the helpless kid he once was, he now has powers and is almost on the same level as Vecna. Although Venca was using Byers as a vessel which gave him powers, it leaves fans questioning why he didn’t get them sooner.
The new powers are somewhat understandable given there is a reasonable explanation. If that was the only plot twist the writers pulled, maybe the show wouldn’t get as much criticism as it does now. Except it’s not the only twist introduced.
The most confusing part of the new season is the fact that the concept of The Upside Down now being a ‘wormhole’ is introduced and now is the only thing holding the world from being completely destroyed. This concept almost omits all the knowledge we previously had on the realm.
Overall fans are mostly annoyed with the way their beloved show ended, having to wait almost 10 years for a conclusion they weren’t happy with. Given the show was supposed to be a one season wonder, there is no doubt the writers were left scrambling to figure the rest out. The show was great as a whole and many are sad to leave it off on the note it did. Still, the writers and actors did a great job on the show, and have every reason to be proud of how far the show went.
