Going back over 50 years of former athletes and coaches, five new inductees joined Alton High School’s Athletic Hall of Fame on Nov. 26 at the halftime during the boys’ varsity basketball game.
This year, four athletes and one team were being inducted. The inductees are—Clarence “Sonny” Willis (Class of 1968), Bob Eichen (Class of 1976), Waide Neal, (Class of 1989), Katie Mans (Class of 2018), along with the 1992 football team.

The Hall of Fame recognizes athletes, teams and coaches for their past accomplishments to Alton athletics.
“To be on the Hall of Fame to me represents a stark commitment to both one’s improvement and to the integrity of our legacy as a school,” boys varsity tennis player Erick Humphrey said.
Several people are on the selection committee including Athletic Director Chris Kusnerick and Assistant Athletic Director, and Head Wrestling Coach, Eric Roberson.
“We always look forward to this night and love to recognize the best athletes, teams, coaches and contributors that AHS has ever had,” Roberson said
Created by former Head Football Coach, Joe Hook, the Hall of Fame began in 2010.
Eligible athletes must fit the criteria, which includes having graduated five years prior to nomination, having received athletic recognition such as All-Conference or All-State and more.
It’s more than just sports achievements though, as nominees must have displayed “outstanding character as an athlete,” and “as a citizen of the community,” According to the Alton Athletics website.
“It’s a great achievement for anyone who receives it,” Head Track Coach, Chelsea Anderson, said.
