A unique opportunity exists at Alton High, where students can share their creativity with the whole school. Calliope helps young artists express and show their art forms. The Calliope magazine shows forms of drawing, digital art, photography, and creative writing.
Sponsor of the Calliope, India Taylor, describes the club as “a mini student council”.
Calliope meetings consist of looking at art, voting on what should go in the magazine, and getting to meet other people who love art, and making new friends. Many students submit their art for the magazine, helping artists express themselves.
Artist in the latest edition of the magazine, Mak Cleary, said “I think Calliope is a good boost for artists … it can make them feel more motivated.”.
While Calliope might not be a well-known club within Alton High, it has gathered quite a few artists and has caused the creation of new friendships. If you are interested in joining Calliope, the club meets every Monday and Thursday from 3:30-4:30. The first meeting date is Sept. 8, 2025.
