Serenading the audience with multilingual melodies, general choir, concert choir, Bel Canto and chamber choir performed their winter choir concert on Dec. 10.
Each choir was featured for four songs along with one song that included all four choirs. In total, the performance had 17 soloists as well as five students performing body percussion, three percussionists and a flutist. The soloist included: Madisyn Schelm, Lily Waltz, Macie Tyler, Ava Gentry, Serenity Jones, Ava Ball, Elizabeth Sanders, Rebekah Calaway-Haveck, Alyssa Knight, Eli Ware, Evelyn Terpening, Aanya Sharpe, Nadja Kapetanovich, Marvin Short and Mackenzie Ingram.
The percussionists, junior Oren Asher, senior Abbi Underhill and junior Wesley Lebrun, and the flutist, senior Abby Henkhaus, did a wonderful job keeping up with the rhythm of the vocalists. Additionally, collaborative pianist Michael Frazier contributed to the melody of nearly every song.
“Me and my fellow percussionists had a good groove… I thought it turned out really well,” Asher said.
This year was the first that choir director Leah Galbraith has compiled a general choir that is comprised of entry level singers, most being freshman. Freshman Gracie Gittinger is a member of general choir and was given the opportunity to be a featured body percussionist in the final song of the night.
“It was a little bit scary at first but it turned out really well,” Gittinger said.
The president of choir is senior Mackenzie Ingram, who has been with the program for all four years of highschool. Ingram stated that she was pleasantly surprised with the outcome of the evening.
“This was the first time I have heard all of the choirs perform outside of rehearsal and I think this is the best time they have performed all of their songs,” Ingram said.
The choir was not the only talk of the night as Galbraith praised her students for their participation in the Illinois Music Education Association’s, ILMEA, district and state competitions. While all of chamber choir auditioned, only senior Nadja Kapetanovich was selected for All State.
The choirs only have two remaining concerts for this year on Mar. 11 and May 13.
