This Day in History
In 1931, “Star Spangled Banner” officially became the US national anthem by congressional resolution.
“King Kong” starring Fay Wray had its NYC premiere in 1933.
The Temptations’ “My Girl” reached #1 on the charts in 1965.
And in 2013, a 2 year old girl became the first child born with HIV to be cured.
Battle of the Schools Trivia Night
On Saturday, March 25, 2017, the RiverBend Growth Association is holding a young adults trivia night at East Alton-Wood River High School.
Tables will be $80 each.
This trivia night is a fundraiser for nonprofit organizations such as the American Cancer Society and the Nature Institute.
Come on out and support this great cause!
Riverbend CEO Program
Attention Juniors interested in being in the CEO program next year: Applications are due by March 8. Please be sure to stop by the guidance office to pick up your application and get started on it soon!
IT IS TIME TO SIGN UP FOR AP TESTS! Please see Mrs. Lehman in Bookkeeping to pay and sign up. Any other questions or financial hardship, please see Mrs. Williams in guidance.
Lewis and Clark Enrollment Day
Seniors: Sign up now to attend Enrollment Day at Lewis and Clark Community College on March 10th.
Seniors will be enrolling and choosing college classes. Transportation and lunch will be provided.
Please come to the Guidance office for the necessary paperwork.
The deadline to sign up has been moved to tomorrow, March 3, due to a large amount of applicants.
If you are interested in scholarship opportunities at Lewis and Clark you must apply online before March 5th.
There are many Lewis and Clark scholarships available. See Mr. Everage in the guidance office if you need assistance with this.
Seniors: Keep checking AHS guidance site to find scholarships.
If you need help, come to Guidance on Wed or Thurs. See Mrs. Thornton.
Mayor Visit 2017
Both the Alton and Godfrey Mayors will speak in the auditorium on Wed, March 8 at 9am.
This will occur only during first hour; please come after the bell with your class.
This is only for senior classes who sign up. Sign ups are available through Abby Peipert or Mr. Macias.

If you are participating in the Abraham Lincoln Read for a Lifetime program, voting is now open! In order to vote, you must have read at least four books from the reading list. Voting will end on March 15th.
Mr. Irresistible is being held on Friday, March 10, at 7:00 p.m. Students are encouraged to please attend.
SIU-E Annual High School Art Exhibit Reception
The students did exceptionally well at the SIU-E High School Art Exhibit Reception! The show is juried with only 35% of the art work submitted accepted in the show. The competition includes high schools from St. Louis to the Metro-East.
The following students artwork was accepted in the show: in grade 9, Jenna Hand; in grade 10, Erin Hillery; and in grade 12, Margaret Goble, Andrew Isiminger, and Kevin Dahner.
4th Annual Charity Fashion Show
FCCLA is sponsoring a fashion show On Wed, March 8. The proceeds from ticket sales will benefit the Oasis Women’s Shelter in Alton. It is at 7:00 pm in the AHS Auditorium. Tickets are $5 for Adults and $3 for Students. The theme is “Struttin’ Through the Ages”.
If you would like to pre-purchase fashion show tickets, see Mrs. Birch, Mrs. Ferree, or Mrs. Douglas.
Tickets can also be purchased at the door on the night of the Fashion show.
Starting next Wednesday, March 8, we will have a Zumba class after school from 3:30-4:15 in the B building courtyard. Make sure to bring something to drink and some comfortable clothes. Class may be canceled if there is bad weather so listen to announcements. See Mrs. Burgess in B251 for more information.
